Jaipuri Razai

Razai (Hindustani: रज़ाई or رزائی, ruh-zaa-ee) may be a bed-quilt utilized in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, North India and Nepal. It’s a kind of bedding almost like a duvet or comforter. Razais usually have a cotton, silk or velvet cover which is full of cotton. They will provide an excellent deal of heat even within the very weather which will occur in these regions, primarily due to the insulating effects of the large amount of air trapped within the cotton.

The cotton in a razai clumps over time, thinning the razai and driving the air out, which causes the razai to become less effective as a protection against the cold. For this reason, before the onset of winter weather, it's common for families to urge their razais carded: the cotton in the razai is removed, carded to eliminate the clumping, and reinserted into the razai-cover.This is done by razai-carders who are professionally adept and seasonally employed during this activity. The bowed carding instrument, called the dhunki, features a distinctive twang when it's in use or its string is plucked. This twang may be a common daytime sound in rural areas within the autumn, and is usually used as a cultural regard to the onset of winter in local literature and films.
